The BMW X5 is a luxury crossover SUV introduced in 1999 as the first generation E53. It was BMW's first SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) also known as "Four-by-Four" (4x4) in the UK. It features all-wheel drive which is branded as the "X" drive system and is available with either manual or automatic transmission. The second generation X5, known as the E70, was launched in 2006, with the first M version announced in 2009.
BMW describes the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than an SUV, to emphasize its on-road ability despite its size. Like the Lexus RX 300 and Mercedes M-Class, the X5 heralded the shift from truck-based body-on-frame SUVs to sedan-based crossovers that would come to fruition in the late 2000s.
Until 2009, all X5s were manufactured in Greer, South Carolina at the Spartanburg BMW plant. Since July 2009, they are also assembled in Kaliningrad, Russia by Avtotor.
In 2003, BMW launched the smaller X3, which uses the "X" prefix for the 4 wheel drive system or BMW "X" drive system and the BMW SAVs which were derivatives of the BMW number-series models.

2011 bmw x6
The 2011 BMW X6 offers a new transmission on some models. X6 seats 4, is slightly larger than BMW's 5-Series midsize cars, and features a raised suspension similar to the company's X5 midsize SUV. Conventional X6 models come in three trim levels, each with twin-turbocharged engines and standard all-wheel drive. The xDrive35i has a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder, and the xDrive50i has a 400-horsepower 4.4-liter V8. The X6 M uses a 555-horsepower version of the xDrive50i's V8. New for 2011, the xDrive35i and xDrive50i get an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 35i and 50i incorporate BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration System, which is designed to save fuel by limiting to deceleration or braking the time when the alternator charges the battery. The X6 M has a 6-speed automatic. The ActiveHybrid X6 uses a "two-mode" system that teams a 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor for 480 horsepower total. It, too, has all-wheel drive and can run on one or both of its power sources depending on driving demands. It requires no plug-in charging and has a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves much like an automatic. Maximum towing capacity is 6,000 pounds. Standard on all X6 models is BMW's Dynamic Performance Control, which works with the AWD system to distribute torque between the individual rear wheels. The system is designed to improve steering feel and handling response. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Lane-departure warning is optional, as is adaptive cruise control. Also optional are side- and top-view cameras designed to provide a 360-degree view around the vehicle. Standard on all is BMW's iDrive control system, which uses a console knob to control entertainment, navigation, communication, and climate functions. Heated rear seats are optional. The X6 M has specific suspension tuning and trim. This report is based on evaluations of the 2010 BMW X6.

2010 BMW X6 Review
At a base rate of $95,000, the 2010 BMW X6 offers powerful performance, sporty design, and an exciting driving experience. This 2 door, 4 seat SUV contains brand new twin-Garett-turbo packing 4.4 liter V8 engine that delivers 555 HP with a torque rated at 500 lb-ft. The acceleration rate of this powerful performance car is 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The top speed is artificially restricted to 155 mph. Without the restriction, this commanding fast car would top a speed of 174 mph.
The special M suspension of the 2010 BMW X6 includes Adaptive Drive and newly-developed Servotronic power steering which allows for mind-boggling stability and precisely controlled steering. The turbocharged M V8 is equipped with an advanced cooling system. There are two high-capacity water-to-air intercoolers which are constantly optimizing performance, especially when driving under extremely challenging driving conditions. An aluminum oil sump with a unique finned surface ensures optimum cooling at all times, even during particularly difficult driving. As well, this high performance fast car contains a 6 Speed M Sport Paddle-Shifted Automanual transmission.
The 2010 BMW X6 has outstanding braking power. The high-performance M brake system consists of enormous four-piston fixed calipers at the front with floating calipers at the rear, and combined with internally-vented lightweight brake discs. They feature a riveted connection to join the aluminum rotor hats with the cast-iron rotor discs. When it comes to control, the M Dynamic Mode permits very high speeds on winding and curving bends with the DSC system overriding only when the vehicle reaches its curb gripping limits. Steering can be done with maximum precision allowing for greater control and optimal performance.
The exterior of the 2010 BMW X6 showcases an athletic design. It features special gills in the front fenders, 20-inch light-alloy wheels, quad tailpipes of the exhaust system, and side skirts that are designed to support its high quality aerodynamics. It is composed of M-specific front and rear bumpers, M exterior mirrors and distinctive sills and wheel arches. Commanding lines and pure dynamics are trademark M distinctive features. The coupe-like roofline flows dynamically into the rear, where it meets the flared shoulder area. Classic motor sport features such as the aerodynamically optimized air ducts in the air dam trim and the wheel arch air vents support the athletic character. The sporty design makes this hot roadster a real head-turner.

We bet there are still thousands of BMW M fans out there reeling from the fact that the performance division is launch its first ever SUV model, and a turbocharged one at that. Those fans better get used to it fast as BMW has just revealed its new X5 M and X6 M SUVs ahead of their New York Auto Show debut.
The latest images reveal more aggressive overall styling and slightly lower stance for the performance pair, though there remains a healthy amount of wheel-arch gap. The hood, front air dam, and headlights are virtually identical on the BMW X5 M and X6 M.
Unique 20in split five-spoke wheels, absolutely enormous brake discs that could pull double duty as pizza pans and a sporty rear diffuser/exhaust area add to the M-specific appeal. Inside, a two-tone leather treatment with M branding complete the first-ever M-SUVs.
The new M engine is the world's first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders
Enlarge PhotoBoth models are powered by a newly-developed 4.4L V8 M engine delivering 555hp (412kW) at 6,000rpm and 500lb-ft (677Nm) of torque from a low 1,500 to 5,650rpm - enough to send the vehicles from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds.
This new M engine is the world's first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo technology. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the "V" section between the two banks of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized.
This configuration, known as Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), offers quick turbo spooling, a linear build-up of engine power, and a broad, consistent torque curve by feeding each of the twin turbochargers with a "charge pulse" at approximately every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation, rather than the more traditional "irregular schedule" of charging. Maximum boost pressure is set at 1.5bar (21psi).
BMW M engineers have also reworked the full drivetrain and chassis, adding new M-specific adaptive suspension, an uprated intelligent xDrive AWD system, and newly-developed Servotronic power steering.
Also featured for the first time on an M model is a six-speed automatic transmission, which for the X5 M and X6 M also comes with an electronic selector on the center console and offers three different driving modes – Drive, Sport and M Manual modes for absolute control of gear selection

BMW X6 Interior
The prototype appears to have less ground clearance than the X5 and is slightly longer. As seen in the previous story linked above, the boxy rear end disguise is hiding a sloping roof line. The X6 will have sportier handling and greater driving dynamics than the X5 while the latter can seat up to seven passengers, the X6 is going to be a strict four seater.
BMW is expected to use the most powerful engines from the X3 and X5 series including the new 3.0 liter diesel bi-turbo delivering 286 HP and the 367 HP 4.8 liter V8 petrol engine. Some time later a turbo V8 engine delivering 420 HP will provide the X6 with even more performance, thus another serious rival against Porsche will be on the road from next year forward.

Coupe, sedan, SUV, Crossover – introduced for the 2008 model year, the X6 is unlike any other BMW that’s gone before. Stylish, sporty, athletic and unique are additional terms that come readily to mind after a spin in the German automaker’s latest offering. Billed as the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the X6 redefines the very notion of a coupe – five doors, four sculpted seats, a higher ride and plenty of cargo space. It defies coupe conventions in one head-turning look, combining coupe agility and SAV versatility, taking the coupe to the next level of performance and sophistication.
Power for the BMW X6 is generated by one of two prime movers: the xDrive50i (4.4L V8) and the xDrive35i (3.0L inline six-cylinder), both outfitted with twin turbochargers and direct injection. Both engines receive an all-new eight-speed sport automatic transmission with adaptive transmission control (ATC) as standard equipment.
The BMW X6 is equipped with the automaker’s proven intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with electronic control to vary the distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles, instantaneously adjusting to driving conditions. The BMW X6 takes xDrive a step further with the introduction of Dynamic Performance Control, a system that ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear wheels.
Dynamic Performance Control incorporates an advanced computer control and an innovative rear differential incorporating two planetary gearsets and two clutch packs that enable the system to multiply torque on an individual rear wheel. The result is that this system can help steer the vehicle by directing torque to either of the rear wheels.
Underway the X6 is an opulent experience for four adults – power is fluid and seamless, while handling and control is more like a precision tool in the grasp of an experienced craftsman. Spirited cornering is virtually flat at even elevated speeds.
Suspension technology used by the X6 starts with a double wishbone control arm configuration at the front with BMW’s patented Integral IV axle, four trailing arms and subframe at the rear. The drivetrain and suspension hardware have been engineered to work perfectly with BMW’s Integrated Chassis Management. This electronic control ensures harmonious interaction of drivetrain and suspension functions within a fraction of a second.
Inside the sporty and luxurious passenger cabin, the X6 offers a unique synthesis of luxury, sporting dynamics and style. The X6 Sports Activity Coupe offers occupants an elevated, commanding seating position. The sporting design of the X6 includes wide opening rear doors that facilitate access individual rear seats separated from one another through the center console, the high-rising side supports and the integrated headrests on all four seats.
Displays, controls and switchgear are typical BMW, with its iDrive MMI in its usual place in the middle of the center console. Despite the steep rake of the rear of the vehicle, the X6 has a large cargo area. The rear 60/40 split folding rear seats add to the versatility of the passenger cabin.
